Attending the MATPP programme at HKU was certainly one-of-a-kind experience for me, as a student with an unrelated educational background to transport policy and planning. The programme could be considered fast-paced for full-time students, especially when we had to determine the dissertation topic and supervisor right in the beginning of the first semester. Nevertheless, the programme has enabled me to expand my knowledge and skillsets, together with improving my research skill when doing my dissertation. This programme is surely unique and very useful for inspiring transport-related practicioners.

The MATPP Programme was a great challenge for me, as I was an accounting student before enrolling at HKU. Of course, I made the right decision. The well-structured programme gave me the opportunity to gain a better and more professional understanding of transport policy and planning. All of my teachers were outstanding and highly experienced in their respective fields. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to them. Additionally, my knowledge and research skills have improved significantly through various assignments, projects, and the final dissertation.
I must admit that the dissertation was tough. However, my supervisor, Professor C. K. Mak, encouraged and inspired me to overcome these obstacles. I cannot thank him enough for enlightening me with so many insightful ideas and meaningful suggestions.
Personally, my MATPP journey was memorable and abundant. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of the teaching staff and classmates for their support and assistance.

For a student like myself, who studied urban planning in my undergraduate degree, the MATPP programme gave me a deeper and more professional understanding of planning and policy—especially thanks to the knowledgeable teachers and experienced industry professionals. The well-structured courses also provided me with comprehensive knowledge of transport policy and planning. In addition, the dissertation helped me to examine TOD (a research aspect of transport) in more detail. Thanks to the valuable academic experience that I gained from the dissertation, I have improved my research and data analysis abilities, and have taken up an occupation in the TOD field. The MATPP programme allowed me to view transport from a different perspective. As a traffic engineer who is responsible for transport infrastructure design, my career knowledge largely depends on the projects that I work on. The assignments in this programme provide opportunities for students to evaluate controversial transport issues such as options for expanding existing airports or proposing a second airport, analysing transport problems in geographical aspects, designing monorail alignments in North Lantau, and visiting foreign cities to understand their public transport operations. The dissertation experience stimulated my interest in pedestrian traffic and provided an opportunity for me to discover possible ways of increasing the walkability of Hong Kong. CLASS 2001

The MATPP programme has given me a comprehensive view of transport development and its related policy and planning from a multi-dimensional perspective. The programme has also consolidated my theoretical foundation, and has inspired my interest in the study of transport and logistics. The scope of the programme is quite wide, which opened my eyes to various fields of transport and logistics. Of course, the MATPP certificate has been very useful for boosting my confidence and overall career development.

The MATPP programme helped to broaden my knowledge of transport planning in different aspects. After graduation, joining the MATPP Alumni has also provided me with opportunities to make friends with experts from different transportation fields.

CLASS 1999

I had been in the airline business for 23 years when I took up the MATPP course in 1997. I had always wanted to improve myself academically in the transportation field, and had been searching for some avenues to pursue this. However, there were no courses that completely matched my requirements, as I wished to blend my practical experience along with some theories in academia. The first MATPP programme came along in 1997, and I was really impressed by it. I thoroughly enjoyed the days on the MATPP programme. Not only did I find what I wanted, but I also cultivated great friendships through the programme. Ten years after graduation, we still fondly reminisce about our experience. Though it was hard work right from the start with Dr Loo, we indulged in the sharing and challenges every minute.

This programme serves as a theoretical support for what I have done in the past and gives me confidence for what I shall carry out in the future.
