Speaker:

Prof Kevin Cullinane Head of Department of Shipping  & Transport Logistics Hong Kong Polytechnic University

In recent years, liner shipping has experienced an explosion in containership size. This is explained by the economies of scale in utilising such ships. This presentation looks at the background to developing trends in containership size over the years and presents the results of a model which quantifies the economies of scale in operating large containerships. Inferences are then drawn concerning the optimal deployment of the existing fleet of large containerships, likely future trends in containership size and deployment and the impact these trends will have upon container operations, logistical systems and ports. Professor Kevin Cullinane is currently the Head of Department of Shipping & Transport Logistics in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Apart from his wide knowledge in the Shipping field, he also excels in applicable mathematics and business studies. Up till now, Professor Cullinane has produced over 50 publications which covered the subjects of “maritime policy & management”, “seaports and container terminals development”, “traffic management”, “road infrastructure development and management”, “logistics planning and management “application of quantitative methods in shipping and road traffic etc…………
